Here are a few things to know about Sunset Park:

A neighborhood in the borough of Brooklyn, Sunset Park is located on the southwest side. North it is bordered by Park Slope and the Green-Wood Cemetery, east it is bordered by Borough Park and south it is bordered by Bay Ridge and west it is bordered by Upper New York Bay. Located between 41st and 44th Streets on Fifth and Seventh Avenues, the neighborhood takes its name from a 24.5-acre (9.9 ha) public park. Greenwood Heights, also known as South Slope, is located north of 36th Street.

Native Americans inhabited the area until 1636, when Europeans arrived. There was little development in Sunset Park during the late 19th century, and it was considered part of South Brooklyn or Bay Ridge. A number of industrial hubs and middle-class row houses were built in Sunset Park between the 1890s and the 1920s as a result of the arrival of elevated railways and the subway. The Sunset Park area was renamed “Sunset Park” due to its decline as an industrial hub in the 1940s and 1950s. In the late 20th century, immigrants began moving into the neighborhood due to its relative affordability, and Hispanics and Chinese dominated the neighborhood’s population. The 21st century will witness a decline in working class Scandinavian, Irish, and Italian communities (along with a lesser amount of predominantly white young urban professionals).
